Tiny Bar, Big Ideas: Barnes & Thornburg Hosting Indiana Meetup during SXSW

The Indiana-based law firm of Barnes & Thornburg will once again host a meetup for Hoosiers attending the South By Southwest (SXSW) Interactive conference, which kicks off next Friday in Austin, Texas. David Wong, a partner at Barnes & Thornburg, will also be presenting on opening day with Sarah Feingold, in-house counsel for the popular peer-to-peer e-commerce site Etsy.

David said the Barnes & Thornburg event at SXSW is kind of a rallying point for Indiana startups and entrepreneurs and other attendees. It’s also a great place for powerful networking opportunities with some of Barnes & Thornburg’s legendary clients like WordPress, OpenTable and Etsy.

David’s provocatively titled presentation with Esty in-house counsel Sarah Feingold — The Internet: F@#% Free Speech, F@#% Fair Use — is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on March 13. Here’s what it’s about:

In a world where patent and copyright trolls, trademark bullies, fraudsters, and IP and domain squatters abound, what can you do to protect your Internet business? Attendees will gain insight into the mindset and goals of these quasi-villains and learn practical advice and strategies for successfully battling with them – or avoiding them altogether.

The presentation will include an overview of the legal framework that allows trolls/bullies/fraudsters/squatters to thrive; case studies and war stories demonstrating how they might brutalize your company; and effective ways you can avoid and defend against them. Learn how to avoid making your company a target; identify the pressure points of the “bad guys”; and when it makes sense for your company to adopt the tactics of the “enemy.”

The Barnes & Thornburg meetup is being held Saturday, March 14, from 6 to 10 p.m. Enjoy great food from one of Austin’s highest-rated food trucks, Lucky’s Puccias, and frosty beverages on the patio at the Austin institution, the Tiniest Bar in Texas.
