Job Description


Barnes & Thornburg is seeking a Document Automation Specialist to join our Legal Operations team as a critical leader for enhancing our lawyers’ and legal teams’ capacities for delivering excellent legal document work product for our clients that leverage document automation capabilities. The Document Automation Specialist will work side-by-side with lawyers, practice groups and departments to help draft and automate key documents, including determining feasibility and advisability of automation, scoping projects, coding and updating templates to reflect applicable legal standards and rules, testing, troubleshooting, training authors and subject matters experts, as needed, and communicating with stakeholders. The Document Automation Specialist will also coordinate with vendors to field technical support issues and quality test system upgrades.


1. Analyze project requirements and provide feedback on how best to structure and manage template creation.
2. Consult with project owner(s) on process and content requirements.
3. Develop template construction plan, milestones, implementation plan, and training materials on a project basis.
4. Code, test and maintain template documents, clause libraries and questionnaires reflecting applicable legal standards and rules, using document assembly and other automation software.
5. Consult with project owner(s) and develop and administer maintenance plans for deployed solutions.
6. Analyze existing templates and provide feedback to project owner(s) and users on possible improvements/enhancements.
7. Propose best practices for document automation to project owner(s), lawyer teams, practice groups and departments.
8. Present solutions to practice groups and internal departments as part of an education and engagement strategy.
9. Provide ongoing support for deployed solutions and serve as point of contact for troubleshooting inquiries.
10. Serve as liaison with vendors for support requests, enhancement/feature requests and product development, and with technical support for upgrades and other software support issues.
11. Stay current on all developments in the document automation field, particularly as applied to the legal sector, and regularly report and make recommendations to the Legal Operations team on the state of the market and suggested future projects.
12. Assist in other related functions to align document automation with the Firm's Strategic Plan.

The ideal candidate will have:
1. Experience working with document automation software, including Contract Express (preferred) or similar platforms
2. Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail, especially as applied to legal documents and concepts
3. Proficiency in utilizing technology/ ability to learn new technology and skills quickly
4. Professional experience with the legal industry and the provision of legal services
5. Knowledge of and professional experience with legal documents
6. Experience in a law firm or similar high-demand, fast-paced professional services environment
7. Demonstrated professional communication abilities
8. Ability to work independently and as a member of the Legal Operations team
9. Ability to organize, prioritize and re-prioritize tasks as necessary to meet competing demands


1. Experience working with and producing work product from document automation software
2. Experience designing, creating technical training and communications to legal or professional services audience.
3. JD and two to three years’ practicing attorney experience preferred. Comparable paralegal experience will also be considered.
