TechPoint recruits hundreds of the best and brightest young people from colleges and universities around the country every year for a chance to interview with fast-growing and influential Indiana tech companies. At stake for these students are full-time internships for summer 2022, free housing and a place in the elite and lauded Xtern program.

This year was one of the largest and most successful Finalist Day events in Xtern program history. By the numbers:

  • 250 tech and business skilled students
  • 107 employer teams representing 59 Indiana tech companies
  • 832 internship interviews were facilitated using Filo.co’s virtual events platform.
  • 147 company-candidate matches made.

The event also marked another milestone: with an applicant from North Dakota, the program has now attracted applicants from every state in the union.

How to get into an Indiana tech career

As the Xtern program heads into its ninth summer, the TechPoint Team is excited to see Xtern alumni sitting on the employer side of interviews and considering students to join the program. Kate Harrison, now an Innovatemap product manager, is one of them.

“Xtern changed my life,” she said, ”I didn’t even know this world of tech existed until Xtern. I am forever grateful for all Xtern has done for me.”

The majority of the Finalist Day matches are with central Indiana companies. Eight are with companies in the Muncie area. Fort Wayne entered the program via Parkview Health

“We are excited to hire our first Xterns as we create meaningful opportunities that assign them to projects with high visibility,” said Max Maile, Parkview Health’s vice president of virtual health. “We believe the candidates have as much to offer us, as we have to offer them. Their contributions will impact the care of hundreds of thousands of patients in Northern Indiana and Ohio.”

Xtern Muncie debuted in 2021 through a partnership with Innovation Connector, Inc., Ball State University, and Ball Brothers Foundation support.

Finalist Day 2021 marks the third time that TechPoint has conducted the event virtually and showcased Filo.co’s capabilities. “Really well run and the [TechPoint] Talent Team handled any issues that came about wonderfully,” said Kate. “Filo is an awesome platform that kept us on track throughout the day.”

The platform wasn’t the only thing attracting compliments.

“Everything was well communicated, the background of the students was easily accessible, and we were presented with a substantial list of talented individuals to interview,” said Max. “On the actual day of the interview, the candidates were well versed, intelligent, and very knowledgeable in a variety of hard to recruit and in-demand majors.”
