INDIANAPOLIS — Exploring how key industry sectors in Indiana are using or plan to use artificial intelligence (AI), the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership (CICP) today unveiled results from its AI in Indiana survey, which was administered statewide last fall in partnership with two of its branded initiatives – Conexus Indiana and TechPoint.

The AI in Indiana survey generated nearly 200 responses with 55 percent indicating the adoption of at least one AI capability—a share in-line with McKinsey & Company’s Global Survey on AI, a widely recognized survey that inspired CICP’s survey questions and has been used by economists and community leaders to track the progress of tech adoption. McKinsey & Company’s Global Survey on AI finds that, while some companies are AI leaders, it is still “early days” regarding broad-based AI adoption.

The AI in Indiana survey also found that the business functions most reported to be using AI are product manufacturing, marketing or sales, and product or service development.

“As we continue to explore AI adoption and its impact in Indiana, our survey responses show a clear interest in AI-related capabilities to better support businesses, their productivity, development, and growth,” said Melina Kennedy, CEO, Central Indiana Corporate Partnership. “With so many existing and unknown possibilities we are using our research and survey feedback to help business leaders prepare for emerging technologies and efforts to boost our state’s economy.”

Nearly 100 survey respondents requested more information on AnalytiXIN, an initiative incubated by CICP’s life sciences initiative, BioCrossroads, to drive sustained innovation in Indiana by connecting university assets and talent in the areas of data sciences, including digital, AI and advanced analytic capabilities. CICP and its branded initiatives will also continue encouraging technology adoption and workforce readiness for innovative technologies.

“These results validate findings from our 2023 ‘Putting Tech to Work in Critical Industries’ report that we are using to expand our offerings to reach Indiana’s businesses where they are,” said Ting Gootee, TechPoint president and CEO. “Tech is an embedded core competency in nearly every Indiana business, and leaders know they must continue to evolve to meet the realities of the Digital Age.”

Most recently, AnalytiXIN’s Darshan Shah and TechPoint’s Dennis Trinkle hosted How to use AI to Improve Productivity and Thrive in the Digital World webinar to provide businesses and their teams with insights and resources to enhance their exploration of generative AI tools. Additional data and insights are also anticipated from sector initiatives under the CICP, including a new analysis of AI’s impact on workforce by TechPoint. That work will provide guidance on both the innovation needs and trends, as well as talent and workforce trends and needs.

“Conexus Indiana has begun to see Indiana manufacturers deploying Artificial Intelligence in their operations. Companies such as Mach Medical, POLARIS Laboratories, and Photon Automation have leveraged Manufacturing Readiness Grants to enhance their production capabilities and provide new services to customers,” said Fred Cartwright, president and CEO of Conexus Indiana. “Conexus survey results also show that the number of companies considering AI adoption in the next five years continues to increase, with 1 in 4 companies reporting in 2022 that their five-year digital technology plans include AI.”
