A group of Hoosier entrepreneurs had the opportunity to learn from a national expert in crowdfunding on November 4 during a seminar with Amy Lesnick, director of social innovation for Indiegogo. The San Francisco-headquartered company is the largest global crowdfunding platform and has hosted more than 150,000 crowdfunding campaigns since its founding.

Lesnick shared examples of successful crowdfunding campaigns from across the globe and also discussed the viral nature an innovative campaign can achieve resulting in substantial marketing and public relations exposure. One featured campaign was that of Chesterton entrepreneur Julie Bombacino, founder of Just Food, LLC. Bombacino was connected with Indiegogo last year by Indianapolis-based Elevate Ventures. Through the mentoring and coaching she received from Indiegogo, Bombacino was able to exceed her crowdfunding goal in only seven days. Just Food provides real meals for tube-fed people, including infants.

Bombacino shared that her campaign relied heavily upon targeted use of social media tools including Twitter and Klout, as well as a segmented email campaign to engage potential donors.

At any given time, there are more than 7,000 crowdfunding campaigns hosted by Indiegogo. Lesnick explained that more than 60% of Indiegogo campaigns involve donors who make multiple contributions throughout the campaign. “People want to be part of a winner,” said Lesnick. She also added that many successful campaigns are team-driven.

“Indiegogo has helped entrepreneurs around the world turn single ideas into high-growth companies,” said David Clark, venture partner at Elevate Ventures. “We hope that bringing their expertise to Indiana will help launch the next wave of success stories right here in our state.”

The seminar was held at Ivy Tech Corporate College in Indianapolis in advance of the 2013 Indiana Governor’s Conference for Women.
