The S.O.S. Challenge: The skill builder you need to gain the next step in your career

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED

Ultimate Skill Building Opportunity

What is one to do when they are looking to land an internship or job in tech but can’t seem to get more experience than their own personal projects?

We are excited to say that The S.O.S. Challenge is being brought back by TechPoint to create a needed space in between personal projects or hackathons and internships to drive and deliver value for university and coding academy graduates who either aren’t ready for an internship or are interested in seeing if they have a place within tech. However, we have pivoted and S.O.S now stands for Summer Opportunity for Skills because we believe that this program truly provides critical, skill-building opportunities for participants!

The S.O.S Challenge was originally created in 2020 when TechPoint felt the need to step in when the COVID-19 pandemic was at its height of affecting internship opportunities. Through the “Summer Opportunity for Students” our team built in less than two months a program to support 500+ students who had lost internship opportunities.

Through mentorship and unparalleled instruction, admitted candidates will use the skills they’ve developed in their respective academic programs to solve problems, and explore the commercialization of their solutions. This intersection allows participants to demonstrate valuable experience whilst exploring their future in technology and entrepreneurship as part of an intentionally cultivated interdisciplinary team.

S.O.S Curriculum is made possible through a partnership with Elevate Ventures. Winners of S.O.S. will have the opportunity to participate in Elevate’s Fall 2021 Regional Nexus Pitch Competitions.

Who will be on my team?

Students will be intentionally assigned to interdisciplinary teams, and empowered to solve an issue outlined by leaders in the local business community. Participants will be guided through their projects by industry professionals who will provide context and perspective to their experience where appropriate. Through this experience participants will gain an affinity for Indiana and understand the opportunities that exist in the tech ecosystem here while gaining the experience needed to get to the next step in their career.

We are excited to say that The S.O.S. Challenge is being brought back by TechPoint to create a needed space in between personal projects or hackathons and internships to drive and deliver value for university and coding academy graduates who either aren’t ready for an internship or are interested in seeing if they have a place within tech. However, we have pivoted for S.O.S to stand for Student Opportunity for Skills because we believe that truly is what this program does for participants, build skills!

The S.O.S Challenge was originally created in 2020 when TechPoint felt the need to step in when the COVID-19 pandemic was at its height of affecting internship opportunities. Through the “Summer Opportunity for Students” our team built in less than two months a program to support 500+ students who had lost internship opportunities and we were only able to pull this off with the help of 200+ Coaches supporting our ninety student teams.

Given these small pivots, we’ve also decided that we want to not only invest in our students but those coaches that make this all possible by providing more refined formal training and leadership skills. If you are someone who is:

  • Currently an individual contributor at your company
  • Have less than ten years of experience in the tech industry
  • Interested in gaining leadership and mentoring skills and experiences
  • And want to support building a pipeline of awesome talent in our very own city of Indianapolis
  • Then we want someone like you to fill out an application!

Official S.O.S Coach Invitation

Coach demand will be based on the number of students in the program. We hope to have two coaches per student team that allows coaches to individually work with 2-3 participants on either the Go To Market or the Product Team.
