Indiana University’s One.IU ‘app store’ wins Tech Services Award for IT to Support the Business
In four months time, the One.IU development team brought consumerism to Indiana University’s web services and turned their, “Search, Click, Done.” into a reality for students and faculty across eight campuses. One.IU was rewarded for their accomplishments with the Tech Services Award for IT to Support the Business during the 15th annual TechPoint Mira Awards honoring the best of tech in Indiana.
One.IU is Indiana University’s “app store” for enterprise IT services. This new web portal developed in 2013, has dramatically streamlined the process of discovering and accessing key resources for 130,000 students, faculty and staff across eight campuses.
One.IU has replaced a portal that was first launched in 2001 and updated in 2005, but developers started from scratch with One.IU. The team found inspiration in the modern IT landscape and integrated best practices into One.IU, such as:
- a core search function like Google because people prefer to search to find things,
- a browse function that behaves similarly to an app store, and
- a site that works on a desktop and a handheld device equally well.
By utilizing a lean startup model and Agile development, the team broke out of the corporate and university development models to offer a user experience that simplifies getting things done, like replacing navigation with search, and other user-first approaches. One.IU was developed from the ground up to be multi-tenant, and so far, two other schools are using the platform, which has proven to be a successful revenue stream for the university.

TechPoint, Indiana’s technology growth initiative, honored the One.IU development team and 14 other Indiana-based companies, entrepreneurs and educators for their technology excellence and innovation on May 3, at the Mira Awards gala presented by BKD CPAs & Advisors. Mira — Latin for miracle and a variable star thousands of times brighter than the Earth’s sun — represents the best of tech in Indiana each year.
Forty-eight independent, volunteer judges spent more than 700 collective hours reviewing the applications, interviewing the nominees and choosing the 15 winners. Judges were primarily subject matter experts and experienced company executives.
Bobby Schnabel, dean of the Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing was also honored at the TechPoint Mira Awards with the Trailblazer in Technology Award.
